As we enjoy the holidays with family and friends, it's important to stay vigilant and avoid making decisions that could be harmful. During the holiday season, there is an uptick in scams and different spam. Scammers have changed their tactics to trick you into taking unwanted actions. They may contact you via text, phone calls, or email. Many scams appear legitimate, but most times, they are fraudulent and there are signs you can follow to distinguish fact from the reality they attempt to portray.
For example, you might receive a message supposedly from UPS stating that they can’t deliver a package because of an issue. If you were not expecting a package, and they request you click on a link and provide your credentials, it is probable that they are attempting to get your personal information. Another common tactic is to say that your antivirus software has expired and mention well-known brands like Norton and McAfee. Legitimate companies usually notify you about software expiration long before contacting you via text or phone call. This occurs on the computer through the installed software and not through enormous banners displayed in browsers. These are called overlay attacks and often happen because someone clicked on a link or visited a fake website.
